Wyalkatchem, 190 kilometres east of Perth, has a special place in the history of True Blue Dreaming. In 2004, it became home to the first pilot of the True Blue Dreaming mentoring concept developed by Dr James Fitzpatrick and other health promotion practitioners to try to motivate and support young people in rural Australia. The group approached Jan Trenordan, a valued community member and  local champion, to help establish the program and it has run most years since. Jan remains actively involved and is a member of True Blue Dreaming Board.

The program is run with Wyalkatchem High School, with student mentees in years 7 to 10 and mentors  from the University of Western Australia’s St George’s College. The mentors and mentees  stay in touch with each other through regular email contact and face to face visits where possible including an annual camp.
