The Impact of Pornography

Presented by Kayelene Kerr

Dip (PublicSaf), AdvDip (PublicSaf), BA (Just)

Kayelene is the Cyber Safety Specialist at WA Child Safety Services and brings with her over 17 years’ law enforcement experience.

Many parents, carers, educators and other professionals working with children and young people feel ill-equipped to deal with the vast array of applications children use, games they play and websites they visit. This is due in part to a lack of knowledge and understanding about what children and young people are doing online and how they are using new technology.

The internet is not new. What is new are the portable devices used by children and young people that gives them direct access to all of the content on the internet, including pornography. Pornography has increasingly become the primary source of sex education for children and young people with many not receiving information or education to critically analysis this content.

This session will provide information about the accessibility of pornography, prevalence of access and the impact of pornography on children and young people specifically in the area of addiction, child-on-child sexual abuse – problem sexualised behaviours and respectful relationships. It will also provide strategies for starting the conversation and resources and tools available to assist parents, carers, educators and other professionals working with children and young people.
